I put 22 year old seeds into a small tray that was about 2 inches deep. The growing medium was Miracle Gro mix that I had added a small amount of liquid fertilizer which was Nitrogen only. The seed were placed on top of the mix and barely covered enough to prevent drying out. I kept the temperature at ~78 degrees F (~26 C.) and waited. I finally got germination on one seed late on day 24.

Those seeds were at least 22 years old and had not been stored properly. They were in a standard letter envelope and were thought to be lost. They ere accidentally found in a small box of older family pictures.

Lessons learned:

1. Keep the seeds moist for the first 2 days and then treat it as normal. My thoughts were that the seed outer casings were very dry at the start and needed some time to soften back up. I you keep it too wet for too long, the seeds will rot.

2. Extra fertilizer in the mix seems to do two things. It provides essential food for the plant you hope to get, and it makes some micro-nutrients instantly available to the seed so that the germ-plasm has all it needs to get going.

3. Keep the temperature up near 78-85 degrees F. It softens those dry/crusty seed casings quickly and keeps them soft.

Now, after you carefully do everything possible to create the best environment for those precious seeds, it is still a gamble. There is no way to know if the seeds are too far gone to rejuvenate. You know that all of the things that seeds go through affect how long they will last before viability ceases. It's still a roll of the dice.

I wish you and your friend much luck in this endeavor.

Ted
